Abstract

Repeated heating of cooking oil produces waste cooking oil that can still be converted into methyl ester sulfonate (MES) surfactant. This study produced a bio-based detergent by varying MES (15, 20, and 25 g) and sodium silicate as builder (5, 10, and 15 g), then evaluated washing performance and simulated industrial-scale utility costs using SuperPro Designer 10. MES was synthesized from purified waste cooking oil through transesterification and sulfonation. Washing tests on cotton fabric stained with 5 ppm methylene blue showed that a 3-hour contact time was required for maximum cleaning. The formulation of 15 g MES + 15 g sodium silicate and all 25 g MES formulations achieved the highest cleanliness level (clean white). Low silicate content produced a wetter and more agglomerated product. Scale-up simulation showed that electricity cost increased with MES mass, whereas steam cost decreased with increasing sodium silicate due to its hygroscopic nature. The selected formulation balances detergency, physical characteristics, and utility efficiency.
