Peran Lapak Baca Buku Siteba Berpuisi Sebagai Ruang Sosial Untuk Meningkatkan Literasi Masyarakat di Kota Padang

Abstract


Literacy is a fundamental foundation for human resource development and lifelong social practice. In Padang City, although the Reading Interest Rate (TGM) has increased, the Community Literacy Development Index (IPLM) remains low, and reading activities in public spaces have not yet become habitual. This study aims to explain the background of the establishment of Lapak Baca Buku Siteba Berpuisi and describe its role as a social space in improving community literacy. The research employed a qualitative approach using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation at Taman Nanggalo, Padang City. Informants were selected purposively. Data analysis followed the reduction, display, and conclusion-drawing model, interpreted through Emile Durkheim’s functionalism and Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space. The findings show that Lapak Baca Siteba Berpuisi emerged from community interaction, concern over limited literacy access, and collaboration with society and local government. The reading stall performs three main roles: providing free reading materials, developing creative space (training, writing, and publication), and creating a social space that fosters interaction and solidarity. Eight out of ten informants experienced improvements in knowledge, reading interest, self-confidence, and social relations. Thus, the reading stall functions not merely as a provider of books but as a social institution that produces literacy culture and strengthens community integration.
